Houston Tour

Board
your bus and relax for a ride up north to the Hanson Quarry at
Garden Ridge, TX.
We will tour the Quarry pit via bus
and watch the large front end loaders haul the aggregate to the
sorting station. From there, it is sorted into bins and ready to
load in hoppers, gondolas or trucks. If we are lucky, we may get to
see a blast and watch thousands of tons of rock fall from the pit
wall. Hanson has several miles of track and two “new to them” ex UP
SD40’s doing the work. UP hauls a trainload a day from this active
pit. We will walk down the hill to the staging tracks where train
loads wait for UP trains. Bring your walking shoes.
Back onboard the bus for a short ride
to historic and busy Ft Sam Houston for a tour of the last Hospital
Car built in 1953 by the St Louis car Company. This car is kept
under cover and is in great shape. You will be able to walk thru
the car and see what it was like to travel by rail in an Army
Ambulance Train. Bring a Picture ID to be allowed on Base!
